The Highlands Elementary "Whale Sculpture" is complete!
POSTED: 11/04/11

I am known for creating sculpture incorporating everyday found or reproduced objects in unexpected contexts. I am equally fascinated with nature imagery, and that is what I sought to explore in the whale sculpture which is recently completed and on public view.
After a Guild of Natural Science Illustrators talk, I was approached by a colleague, Julie Kulak, with the idea of creating a whale sculpture for Naperville's Highlands Elementary. The whale is the school symbol. Some time ago, a young male student was afflicted with a terminal disease. The whale, his favorite animal, was produced in his honor. The school encouraged student involvement, so I came up with the idea to embed the whale's surface with student-created ceramic tile sea creatures based on my drawings. You can see pictures of the process in a Facebook photo set.
The whale is permanently installed at Highlands Elementary School, 525 South Brainard Street, Naperville, IL 60540. Map.

GLOBAL GARDEN SHOVEL featured in Spring/Summer 2011 issue of Western Art & Architecture
POSTED: 8/26/11

The Spring/Summer 2011 issue of Western Art & Architecture arrived on my doorstep and I was pleased to find a photo of my commissioned public sculpture, GLOBAL GARDEN SHOVEL, featured on page 107. The article, "Wanderings: Seattle, Washington", is written by Stella Fong who mentions the sculpture on page 110 as she elaborates her travels on the Link Light Rail in the Rainier Valley observing the diverse community. I appreciate Western Art & Architecture including my work in this feature. Pick up a copy where available!
Willis Tower lobby exhibit "Recycled, Reclaimed, Repurposed", featuring contemporary Midwestern artists Victoria Fuller, Don Baum, and Gail Simpson, reinterprets everyday objects into fine art, now through October 31, 2011
POSTED: 8/12/11

Two of my pieces, RACKET REPRODUCTION and MEASURED STEPS (pictured above) are featured in the lobby of the Willis Tower (formerly named, and commonly referred to as the Sears Tower) as part of an exhibit titled "Recycled, Reclaimed, Repurposed", curated by Emily Nixon of Nixon Art Associates.
The work in the show ranges in media and subject matter, but one element connects them all: they each include objects that, as the title indicates, are discarded, common, and familiar.
RACKET REPRODUCTION, for example, is made from old wooden tennis rackets with sorbet-hued netting, handles cut off, and linked in a chain-like formation. They mimic how bacteria, such as cyanobacteria, reproduce in a similar formation. MEASURED STEPS is made from 36 folding rulers creating a stair step, to be placed on the ground, as a stair would normally function. Notably, due to the public nature of the setting, a decision was made to display the piece on a pedestal.
These pieces are currently on view through October 31, 2011.

Here is Global Garden Shovel planted in the dirt in Seattle at the S.E. corner of Alaska St. and Martin Luther King Way, which will be the Columia City stop along the new transit line running from University of Washington to SEATAC Airport. Still working out the plants in the planter and there is still a fence around it, which will eventually be gone.
So I haven't gotten any distance shots of the whole thing yet.

Show of my Sculpture at Sears Tower:

POSTED: Feb.13, 2009
I got a call from Nixon Art Associates asking me to to show 2 of my sculptures at the Sears Tower. I said, "Of Course." What a great opportunity and good exposure! I didn't know who would be showing with me. Coincedentally,
It turns out that I had a previous connection with both artists. Robert Hudson was my teacher when I studied at the San Fransisco Art Institute, and I was a teaching assistent to Gordon Powel in the first Year 3D program while I was getting my MFA degree at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
I have two sculptures in the show. One is "Safety Star" (shown in the photo above), and the other is "Cluster Housing", which is on the 3rd page in the drop down menu (1988-1992) in the sculpture section on this website.
Here is the info:

Global Garden Shovel:
The saga of the delayed sculpture

POSTED: NOV. 17, 2008
There has been a long delay, almost a year, because of mistakes made in the support system design by an engineering firm, so a new firm was hired,
which took 7 months to find someone willing to do the redesign, and now it is being cut in half, and steel tubes are being installed inside. It appears
that it might be finished by February 2009 and hopefully installed either in February or March. It's been a long time coming and I will be glad to see it finally installed.
I am working on several new pieces: One involves moss and the mushroom amanita muscaria. In other pieces I am using materials such as wisks, garden hoses, clocks, tennis balls, and guitars.
